More medical muddle

An investigation into the death of a 20monthold boy from a severe lung infection has been blamed on a failure of the state health system.

Central Institute of Forensic Science head Pornthip Rojanasunand says Tavinant Inawang died from a severe, unidentified virus.

She's surprised a clinic the boy's father took him to did not refer him to a hospital for emergency treatment. She says both lungs were in critical condition. She says legal action is an option.

She suspects the virus is avian flu or severe influenza.

She says there's a possibility the patient did not present with these symptoms. But, she adds the universal healthcare scheme suffers from many problems. Some clinics don't want to refer patients to hospitals because of the cost. Some hospitals don't want referrals.

Physicians at private clinics must test carefully before discharging patients, she says.

The boy's father suspects his son died because of the Don Mueang clinic's refusal to refer the boy for emergency treatment.

The boy's mother is satisfied with the investigation, which is different than the clinic report stating the boy had a normal fever.
