POLITICAL CONFLICTS

Business sector demands end of conflicts

The Bangkok business community through its Joint Private-Sector Committee on Monday proposed three proposals, in their first joint move following the political disorders.

Apisak Tantivorawong, president of Krung Thai Bank as chairman of Thai Bankers Association - one of the three associations that form the community, said that first of all, he urged all parties not to resort to forces.

"There must be no violence of all kinds," he told reporters.

Second, all parties must respect others' rights. For example, the anti-government protesters must realise that their gathering at the Government House would cause long-term economic impacts.

Third, both sides should reach a compromise and end the conflicts as soon as possible.

"Thailand's exports are intact, but foreign investors have started calling us for updates on the political situation. If the situation is dragged on, it could hurt the economy," he said.
