Phuket, Krabi airports still shut

Phuket and Krabi airports

Phuket and Krabi airports remained closed yesterday as People's Alliance for Democracy supporters occupying them insisted they would continue their protest until the prime minister resigned or PAD leaders said otherwise.

The situation returned to normal at Hat Yai Airport.

More train services were also suspended yesterday as part of the workers' strikes to support the PAD, while the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) was reported to have lost Bt51 million in income in the past three days.

In Krabi, the provincial airport remained closed for the second day, with six inbound flights, two of them international, cancelled. Tourists who have booked outbound flights have been told they can get refunds.

Meanwhile, PAD supporters, vowing to keep blocking Phuket Airport entrance until Samak Sundaravej resigns, continued their mission for a second day. Some 400 police and volunteers were there to ensure security and safety. Deputy Phuket Governor Worapoj Ratthasima affirmed that no violence would be used to drive protesters out.

The airport occupation has alienated some PAD members in Phuket who were upset that the province's tourism was being affected. Some have disowned the movement and called for an end to the closure.

In Songkhla, Hat Yai Airport was reopened. Banjong Nasae, a leading member of local PAD supporters, warned the government not to disperse the Bangkok rally with violence or they would seize Hat Yai Airport again and this time might camp there for at least five days.

A protest has also taken place at Surat Thani Airport, forcing THAI to suspend flights to the province.

Meanwhile, 255 railway workers continued their strike yesterday, affecting 12 northern routes, 27 northeastern routes, 39 southern routes and 45 freight services.
