Food and drink makers want cheaper sugar

Food and drink manufacturers called on the Industry Ministry to allocate a special quota of cheaper-priced sugar to help alleviate the rising cost.

Santi Vilassakdanont, chairman of Thai Industries Federation, said members of the FTI consume around 800,000 tonnes of sugar per year, which accounts for 40 per cent of total sugar consumption.

They estimated they needed to shoulder the additional cost of Bt3.8 billion this year following the jump in retail sugar price by Bt5 per kilogramme in May.

Santi admitted that the special quota, if approved, would result to an extension in debt repayments from farmers to the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives.
