5 killed as van's LPG tank explodes

Five were killed and another five injured when a van transporting Thai Rath newspaper reporters crashed and caught fire in Yingor, Narathiwat yesterday morning.



The group was travel¬ling to the royally sponsored cremation of their colleague Chalee Boonsawat at Wat Thongdee Pracharam. Chalee was killed in last Thursday's bomb in Sungai Kolok.

The van reportedly lost control, crashed into a roadside tree, causing its LPG tank to explode.

Five passengers man¬aged to escape and were taken to Narathiwat Hospital where they are being treated for burns and injuries.

The dead are Southregion editor Thepnarong Wiriyakul, his daughter, Hat Yai reporters Sumolrat Wiriyakul and Sudjai Jittakan and Krabi and Phuket correspondents Thanapat Saengkaew and Thuanthong Sukmuang.
