Political instability worries BoI

Board of Investment deputy secretary- general Hirunya Suchinai said the protest of People's Alliance for Democracy on Tuesday would absolutely plunge investor confidence, but it is difficult to fathom the degree.

BoI officers abroad are now assigned to explain to foreign investors that despite political instability, Thailand's investment policies remain intact.

Hirunya noted that under the sitution, it would be harder for the BoI to achieve the target to promote investment worth Bt600 billion this year.

The agency received investment applications worth Bt241.6 billion in the first seven months of this year, down from Bt256.8 billion in the same period last year, though the number of applications grew from 724 to 749.

Of total applications, 228 were for small-sized projects which had an investment of less than Bt20 million each, while the number of large-sized projects worth more than Bt500 million was only 72 applications, compared to 93 applications in the same period in 2007.
