Democrat pressures for Purple Line bid cancellation

Democrat MP Charnchai Issarasenarak, as vice chairman of the House Committee on counter corruption, plans to seek a meeting with Japan Bank for International Cooperation in Japan on the possible collusion of the Purple Line electric train bidding.

Charnchai said on Monday that the terms of reference has allowed the collusion as the requirement of minimum annual turnover of eligible bidders of Bt10 billion has limited the number of bidders in the first two contracts of the electric train line. Moreover, the third contract also attracted Power Line Enegineering Plc and the Takenaka-Ritha Joint Venture, which rarely joined government bidding. He noted that a shareholder of the joint venture is a former member of Thai Citizen Party, of which former party leader was Samak Sundaravej.

"I don't know if this has anything to do with Prime Minister Samak, but Samak endorsed the investment budget of the train line by Bt5 billion to Bt36 billion," he said.

On the personally-financed trip to Japan, he will submit all document to JBIC, which financed the construction and will convince JBIC to suspend the bidding and call for a new bidding.
