Milcom eyes 15% share of prepaid VoIP market

Milcom Telecom targets Bt100 million in revenue this year from its business of selling prepaid cards for calling via the Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) network, marketing manager Panan Urunanont said yesterday.

The total value of Thailand's prepaid card market for VoIP calling is expected to reach Bt840 million this year, from Bt700 million last year.

Milcom was established last September and generated revenue of Bt16 million during the final four months of the year. It targets a 15-per-cent market share this year.

Subsidiary Milcom System provides an Internet access service under a type-1 licence and an international Internet gateway service under a type-3 licence from the National Telecommunications Commission. Type-1 is for licensees without their own networks and Type-3 is for those with large networks.

Milcom System is also interested in applying for a licence to operate WiMax technology from the licensing body. The technology enables the provision of long-distance broadband Internet connections.
