Amazing mums recognised

Two women - one with a "green heart" and the other struggling to raise blind children - have been named outstanding mothers of the year.

And, Mahidol University named another 16 mothers of the year around the country to mark Mothers' Day.

They have already received their awards from HRH Princess Soamsawali.

Umaegreusong Saramuti, 58, of Raman district in Yala is helping to save the environment. She has donated some of her land for a public plantation. It allows villagers to grow fruit and rubber trees.

Umaegreusong encourages the use of organic fertiliser to pro¬tect people and the environment from hazardous chemical substances.

Umaegreusong also gives local young people the chance to learn animal husbandry.

Her property is divided into pasture for goats, cows and horses. People come to learn how to care for them when they have spare time.

She has turned over a house she owns as a building for the district's nonformal education centre and a community museum.

Sasiwan Boonchom, 32, carries a heavy burden. Her oneandahalfyearold twin boys are blind.

"I would never abandon them because of their dis¬ability. I try to talk with them more and let them touch as many things as I can to make them accustomed to their surroundings," she says.

She and her husband continue to seek treatment for the boys in the hope their condition can be cured.
