Yala schools close after teacher shot

Ten schools in this southern border province closed yesterday over safety concerns a day after a school principal was seriously injured in a drive-by shooting, a senior education official said.

Yala Education Zone 1 director Atthasit Ratkaew said all nine schools in Krong Pinang district would resume classes today.

But Ban Krong Pinang School, whose director was badly injured in the suspected insurgent attack on Tuesday, would reopen on Monday.

Sitthichai Jan-apiban, 55, remained unconscious under close medical supervision in Yala Hospital late yesterday. He received multiple gunshot wounds while returning to his home on Tuesday afternoon.

Police believe the shooting was the work of insurgents.

Atthasit said the incident had badly demoralised fellow teachers and that a prompt security beef-up was necessary to protect local teachers, as insurgents were reportedly active in the area.

Security personnel have been stationed at each school in the district since the shooting.

School teachers in the insurgency-torn southern border region are often targeted by insurgents who have staged violent attacks in Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat provinces since violence erupted in early 2004. More than 3,500 people have been killed since then.
