Mixed Cabinet reaction over Virabongsa appointment

Dr Virabongsa Ramagura does not need to resign as adviser to private buinesses because the former deputy and finance minister is of high integrity and is awared of his responsibilities, Deputy Finance Minister Pradit Pattaraprasit said on Tuesday.

Mixed Cabinet reaction over Virabongsa appointment

Pradit was defending Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej's move to appoint Virabongsa as chief adviser to economic ministers following criticisms that the appointment ran against good governance because it opens the possibilities of the use of inside information.

Council of State secretary-genearl Pornthip Jala said Samak did not break any law in appointing Virabongsa but he must take responsibility if there was a use of inside information.

She said personally, she felt no concern over the appointment but some people may be politicising the issue.

Chart Thai Party leader Banharn however offered different views saying by political etiquette, Virabongsa should resign as adviser in private businesses because as government chief adviser he would get to attend Cabinet meeting and get information in detail about every ministry.

Despite holding differing view, Banharn praised Virabongsa as a person of highly independence and competence.
