Blasts likely the work of one group

Seven small explosions rocked the southern business centres of Hat Yai and Songkhla, injuring two teenage girls on Saturday night, police said yesterday.

There were similarities in the two bombs at Hat Yai and the five in Songkhla's Muang district, which raised suspicion that they were planted by the same group of militants, deputy police commissioner General Pansiri Prapawat said.

The militants had used low-pressure explosions to draw attention and were not really aimed at causing serious damage, he said.

The most damage was at Chalathas Road in Songkhla where 2-3 kilograms of explosives hidden in a motorbike destroyed two other motorbikes.

The bombs targeted 7-Eleven convenience stores, restaurants, tea shops and police checkpoints.

Thirteen teenage suspects from the deep-South were detained in connection with the blasts. They denied involvement and told police they were on a pleasure trip to Samila Beach. -
