
"No one wants to see a coup, especially politicians in a democratic system. Both the government and the opposition must help prevent a coup," he says.
Abhisit says the government must not stage a coup against itself.
There's speculation the People Power Party-led coalition - accepted as the ousted Thai Rak Thai of deposed PM Thaksin Shinawatra with a new name - will attempt to end its current political problems by staging a coup against itself.
"No matter who stages a coup, they are not good things. We must act according to the rules, not allow whoever is in power to change the rules," he says.
Abhisit says the country has been in political crisis for more than two years and this reveals deep-rooted problems.
But, he says at least in this time it has become clear more people believe coups to be "unacceptable".
