MILK'S PRICE RISE

Price of kids' milk to rise, but not school

Parents will have to spend more for their children's milk next week after the Commerce Ministry signs off on a 75satang increase in the price of a 250cc carton, but school milk will not be affected.

The current retail price is Bt9.50.

The Cabinet recently approved a Bt3.50 hike in the price of fresh milk to Bt18 per kilo¬gram.

A senior commerce source said yesterday that the ministry had to heed the calls of pro¬ducers, which face higher costs for milk sup¬plies.

Some dairy companies have asked the ministry for a higher price rise of Bt1.50 a carton.

The ministry will ask for the government's assistance in absorbing the higher price of milk for students to minimise the impact on public schools, the source said.

According to the ministry, about 70 per cent of milk is distributed through normal commercial channels such as modern traders and wholesalers, which would be allowed to sell at the new price, and the remaining 30 per cent through schools, which should be able to buy at the old price.

The ministry would carefully consider price changes based on the real cost of raw materials, as some producers are not direct¬ly affected by the rising freshmilk price because they use powered milk.

Meanwhile, Yangyong Phuangrach, directorgeneral of the Internal Trade Department, insisted that the ministry had not yet allowed the soybeanoil price to go up by Bt4.50, which had been scheduled for today.

The ministry will wait for a new minister to be appointed before considering lifting the price from Bt49.50 a litre bottle to Bt54.
