Rethinking history?

The government has a new committee reviewing and analysing the country's history. Its work may affect state policy because the government will seek its advice when dealing with historical matters.

It is chaired by Prof Prasert na Nakhon, 90.

Prasert was named this country's most outstanding researcher in 1988. He is a former head of the Royal Institute and an expert in philosophy, history and archaeology.

His deputies are Winai Pongsripian and Wuthichai Moonsilp and the members include Warunyupa Sanitwong na Ayutthaya, Theerawat na Pompetch and Sukanya Bamrungsuk.

Culture Minister Anusorn Wongwan says it will review historical records to ensure major events are recorded accurately.

"The ministry will oversee the committee but will not interfere with its work," Anusorn says.
