House speaker testifies with EC

House Speaker Chai Chidchob yesterday delivered an almost three-hour statement to an Election Commission panel over an allegation that he had violated the Constitution for holding shares in a quarry firm that was awarded mining permission from the state.

Chai submitted some documents to the panel but refused to elaborate in the detail about his statement saying he was confident that he would receive justice from the EC panel headed by Prasan Susikkhakosol.

He said as House Speaker he was knowledgeable about the law and he was confident he had not violated the constitution.

Chai argued that according to the Mining Act 1967, he did not hold shares in the company that had a concession with the state.

The second paragraph in Article 265 stipulates that political office holders should not have conflict of interest by holding shares in companies that receive state concessions.
