Farmers pressure for milk price hike

The Cabinet yesterday approved the fresh cow milk price hike to Bt18 per kg, following pressure from over 1,000 milk cow farmers who blocked Phitsanulok Road early morning of Tuesday. Boxed milk prices could rise Bt1-Bt2 per unit. The increase would take effect after acknowledgement from the Interior Ministry which distributes fresh milk to schools and the Commerce Ministry which oversees consumer goods prices. Over 1,000 milk cow farmers blocked Phitsanulok Road early morning of Tuesday, to pressure for the government's approval for further milk price increase.

Their leader, Chalor Peeranarong, said that the production cost now stays at Bt15-16 per kg, but milk price is sold at only Bt14.50. Some farmers had their cows killed to reduce debt.

He noted that while the committee on milk cow and products resolved on July 7 to raise the milk price to Bt18 per kg, the resolution is not effective yet as the Agriculture Ministry has not yet submitted the issue for the Cabinet's approval.

"We're here today to pressure the agriculture minister to submit this for the Cabinet's meeting today," he said.
