EC to probe stake claims

The Election Commission has set up two working groups to investigate alleged shareholdings by some opposition MPs and appointed senators in public companies with state con-cessions.

Sumet Upanisakorn, an election commissioner, said yesterday the subcommit-tees were given 30 days to complete their work and report their findings to the EC.

MPs from the ruling People Power Party recently petitioned with the EC, call-ing for an inquiry into the matter.

It is against the law for political office-holders to retain shareholding in

a company that is awarded state concessions.

Sumet said yesterday he was not concerned about legal doubts about the for-mation of the current Commission, which was appointed by coup-makers. If there were changes to constitutional clauses involving the EC he

would act as required, he said.

"If the altered law says we will have to go, we will act accordingly," he said.
