CU lecturers appeals for "Da Torpedo"'s release

The Criminal Court is expected to complete its appellate review within seven days following Thursday's filling of an appeal for the temporary release of activist Darunee Chanchoengsilapakul, also known as Da Torpedo, who is facing a lese majeste charge.

Chulalongkorn University lecture Suthachai Yimprasert said he lodged the appeal as bondsman and friend of the suspect. He said he used his academic position as the bond.

On Wednesday, Suthachai tried but failed to seek the release of Da Torpedo. The court rejected the bail application on grounds of flight risk.

In the appellate argument, the defence contended the suspect had no intention to flee and that the accusation of lese majeste was a politicised charge which does not justify remanding her.

Should the appellate review be unfavourable, Suthachai said he was willing to fight in the Supreme Court to secure bail for Da Torpedo.
