UN delays decision on Thai-Cambodia border row

UN Security Council has postponed its decision on the Thai-Cambodia border dispute after certain countries including the US believed the matter should be settled on bilateral basis, Thai Ambassador to the UN Don Pramudwinai said Thursday.

The decision will be reconsidered at around 9pm Bangkok time, Don said.

At the request of Cambodia, UNSC convened in its special session the border row between Thailand and Cambodia today whether to referee the conflict. Thailand insisted that it should be settled on bilateral basis.

The one-hour meeting cannot decide on the matter because certain countries, particularly the US which is a permanent member, did not agree with the Khmer request. A UN regulation states that a decision on a matter should have unanimous agreement from the members.

Therefore, the meeting decided to defer the decision, Don said.

"It is beneficial for us that the US does not agree with Cambodia's idea for the UN to referee the dispute," Don said.
