Traffic-management system to ease road stress

In the near future, car drivers in Bangkok will get to drive smoothly without wasting time at junctions or in traffic jams, thanks to a project called the Smart Sign Area Traffic Control System developed locally by the Genius Traffic System.

Genius Traffic System executive director Boonya Tantipanichaphan said the traffic system is an intelligent traffic-management system which will help reduce traffic jams between junctions.

The system will use sensors at junctions, which will function as vehicle detectors. These will evaluate the traffic situation, count the  cars on the road and provide the information to a control room or computer centre via optic fibre.

Thus, system administrators will be able to monitor traffic in real time  from the computer centre. They will be able to zoom in on the traffic situation through closed-circuit televisions installed on the top of traffic lights.

Each junction will be equipped with three detectors, one at the stop line and two others at the tail line and queue-spillback line, respectively.

"The system will enable better traffic management during rush hours without the need for traffic policemen because administrators will be ble to monitor and control traffic lights from the computer centre," Boonya said.

Administrators can automate the switching on and off of traffic lights using the Isolate Adaptive Traffic Control System. It can provide automatic control for up to eight days.

Boonya said the company implemented a pilot system in Hat Yai district a couple of years ago. It spent four years on research and development and about Bt10 million in developing the system.

"The system will reduce imports of traffic-management systems from abroad, which are twice as expensive as this local system," Boonya said.

He said the company is also working on other local projects to develop  LED street lights, and light decollation and solar-cell technology.
