EC refers Samak TV-show case to Constitution Court

The Election Commission has voted four to one to submit a case to the Constitution Court for a ruling on whether Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej's hosting of a television programme was constitutional.

Secretary-general Suthiphon Thaveechaiygarn said the EC had also voted three to two to drop the case against Deputy Commerce Minister Wiroon Techapaiboon holding shares over the legal cap, as the company had closed before he became a minister.

The EC did not comment on Samak's hosting the programme but not getting paid, as it felt this was up to the court to rule on, he said.

The commission also agreed to nullify the vote affecting Wichien Khaokham and Kriengsak Faisri-ngam, two People Power Party MPs in Udon Thani's Constituency 4.

Suthiphon said the EC had appointed two panels to investigate People Power MP Supachai Jaisamut's allegation against 61 MPs and senators of illegally holding shares in companies with state concessions.

The panels are expected to finish their investigations in 30 days.
