Mild on merit

Fewer people are making merit these days because of tough economic times, a Bangkok University poll reveals.

The July 12 to 14 survey of 808 Bangkok residents aged over 18 found 56.6 per cent admits the harsh economy means fewer meritmaking events and smaller donations. The rest says it's experienced no change.

The most popular form of merit making is food offerings at morning alms, 32.8 per cent, worshipping at temples, 20.5 per cent, and cash and goods donations to monks, 16.4 per cent.

Almost 45 per cent makes morning alms food offerings at least once a month, the poll says.

A quarter of the sample will be making offerings today, Asarnha Bucha Day, and tomorrow, the start of Buddhist Lent. Later, almost 19 per cent will participate in candle parades.
