PPP threatens to impeach independent agencies

A group of People Power Party MPs led by northeastern members allied to former Thai Rak Thai Party executive Newin Chidchob are threatening impeachment against four independent agencies.

PPP Roi Et MP Nisit Sunthuprai said the party was preparing to file petitions against the Election Commission, the National Counter Corruption Commission, the Office of the AuditorGeneral and the Constitution Tribunal.

He said 126 MPs had signed their names to the petitions and would meet this week to decide whether there were legal grounds to file for impeachment against each agency.

Nisit said a quarter of the total number of MPs could sign to seek an impeachment against independent agencies with the Senate. The Senate then would seek a ruling from the Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Political Office Holders.

If the court ruled an agency had committed a wrong, they have to cease operating immediately, he said.

PPP Nakhon Ratchasima MP Bunchong Wongtrairat said the party might seek impeachment only against the NCCC on grounds of not being royally appointed.

The PPP accuses the EC of printing ballot papers exceeding the number of voters. For the NCCC, they accused the agency of raising the salaries of advisors and secretaries. They accuse the OAG of having conflicts of interest.
