Talking to the animals

Nothing planned for this weekend? Then pack up some sandwiches and head to the zoo

Bird Day at Dusit Zoo

For the last 70 years, Bangkok's Dusit Zoo has been a popular hangout for urban folk from all walks of life.

Established in 1938 during the reign of King Rama VIII, the park is particularly favoured by curious youngsters and families eager to spend time together away from the pollution and traffic.

On entering the park, you're greeted by large, leafy trees and surprisingly fresh air. Get a map or walk along the small, winding road into the zoo itself and become acquainted with animals you might have never seen be¬fore.

Dusit Zoo has most kinds of creatures, from birds, reptiles, deer, bears, tigers, monkeys and elephants as well as hippos, giraffes and penguins.

In the reptile building, you can say hello to the crawlers as they sunbathe and see how nocturnal creatures spend their days.

Enjoy the walk, or hop into the train for a quick overview. There are green lawns and seating areas all over the zoo. Take your own picnic or buy some food at reasonable prices.

Take time too to take out a paddleboat (Bt60 for half an hour). The vast lake in the middle of the park will take you to parts of the zoo you can't access via paths.

Get an ice cream, a paddle buddy and enjoy the ride!
