Pongpol protests against World Heritage Committee

Pongpol Adireksarn, head of Thailand's World Heritage Committee on Monday issued a protest letter against World Heritage Committee soon after it ruled during the 32 nd meeting to accept Preah Vihear as a World Heritage site.

In the letter, Pongpol expressed disappointment that the committee rejected Thailand's proposal for joint nomination of the Hindu temple as the World Heritage site.

Pongpol also disapproved of the committee's decision to list Preah Vihear by using only the first criterion without consideration of the buffer zone that would enhance the gracefulness of the temple.

The letter said the Thai committee aimed to postpone the listing of Preah Vihear Temple until both countries dissolve disputes over the overlapping zone. It protested against the use of any geographical diagrams or maps by the World Heritage Committee that may lead to conflicts of locals of the countries in the future.
