Injured Ballack a doubt for final after missing training

Vienna - Germany captain Michael Ballack is an injury doubt on the eve of Sunday's Euro 2008 final against Spain, the German football federation (DfB) said Saturday.

The Chelsea midfielder missed the team's final training Saturday evening at the Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna because of an injury to his right calf, the same problem that saw him miss the 2006 game of the 2006 World Cup.

"We aren't giving up hope," said team manager Oliver Bierhoff.

Ballack, 31, has complained since Friday of the problem to his right calf muscle. He did not train with the team at their Swiss base in Tenero on Friday evening.

"A decision on whether Ballack can play on Sunday is completely open and will be decided at short notice," the German football federation said.

Ballack stayed at the team's hotel for treatment on Saturday evening.
