SEC chief will reapply for job

Thirachai Phuvanatnaranu-bala, secretary-general of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), will join the race to become the watchdog's next chief, quashing rumours he will be promoted to central-bank governor.

"I absolutely will nominate myself for the top job, because I'm confident I have a good track record and that I'm qualified for the job," Thirachai said yesterday.

The amended Securities and Exchange Act stipulates that the SEC must initiate the selection of a new board and secretary-general. Once the new board is formed, Thirachai must resign.

The selection committee has picked all of the directors, but the official announcement is pending Finance Ministry approval.

Thirachai declined to comment on speculation the government was going to replace Bank of Thailand Governor Tarisa Watanagase with himself. This issue was also raised by the opposition leader during the no-confidence debate.
