Thailand and HK should get together

Thailand and Hong Kong would be a perfect match if they tightened cooperation on garment manufacturing and fashion goods, a senior Hong Kong Trade Development Council official said yesterday.

Loretta Wan, the council's Bangkok-based regional director for Southeast Asia and India, said Thai and Hong Kong companies should form partnerships to produce well-designed, high-quality garments and swap strong points, in order to boost exports to world markets. "Such cooperation will not only increase export growth for both sides, but also lead to an exchange of technology and knowledge in the industry," she said.

Hong Kong can offer design knowledge and provide factories based in China to mass produce garments. Thailand has a good knowledge of design and is highly sophisticated in garment and textile production. Wan said Thai companies also had high potential to produce made-to-order apparel for brand-name firms in Hong Kong.

Thailand is the world's 13th-largest garment exporter, while Hong Kong is among the world's top 10 garment suppliers for world-class brand names.

To boost the efficiency of Thailand's fashion-goods and housewares industries, Wan urged Thai traders, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises, to take part in both Hong Kong Fashion Week and the Housewares, Gifts and Toys Fair next month.
