A coat of many colours, just as long as there's no black

When we were in school, we all enjoyed Sports Day. We were grouped according to our rival colours, one year in the Red group, the next in the Yellow.

As if Sports Day has come back to haunt us, grown-up people are now ganging up with others of the same political opinions and branding themselves with different colours.

The People's Alliance for Democracy honours Yellow to show their devotion to the monarchy. Yellow is the colour of Monday, the birth-date of His Majesty the King.

But as its quest involves the ousting of certain politicians, supporters of these potentates have launched a counter-attack. And they've adopted Red as their faction's colour.

Knowing that the entire nation is in a race, can we afford to have only two teams?

Enter the White team who supports the peaceful struggle between the two factions. The colour fits the objective, for white symbolises purity and peace.

Just joining the race is the Orange team which is looking for new members through the Internet.

"Som_Love_Everyone" is the name of the new e-mail. The group leader explained that Orange is the combination of Yellow and Red and was born out of the understanding that the Yellow and Red causes would only deepen social division and drive conflict to an irreconcilable point. (Indeed, "irreconcilable" is the word that former prime minister Anand Panyarachun used in his latest interview to describe the situation.)

Orange's e-mail is so colourful. It starts with views towards Yellow and Red: "Yellow made a mistake by allowing Green to roam the town and cause problems. Meanwhile, Red is hot-tempered and inclined to play Yellow's game by inviting Green into the streets. Yellow's gathering could be another invitation for Green and once Green comes out, the Kingdom would turn Black. Black is the enemy to all, no matter whether you are Yellow, Red or Orange. "

Orange proposed that Yellow can monitor the government's performance but should not signal for action from Green, while Red must refrain from confrontation and Green must absolutely leave politics in the hands of the public.

"Orange respects different views but hates division. We believe that Thai society contains many colours, not just Yellow, Red or Green and once they come out to speak their minds, Yellow, Red and Green would know that they are not alone in this society."

The more players, the merrier! But with different goals, runners could sprinting on different tracks. Black would then take over the day.
