CSR 'the way forward'

The Department of Industrial Works (DIW) is encouraging manufacturers to focus on corporate social responsibility (CSR) and make them part of their ISO 26000 standard, which takes effect in 2010.

DIW yesterday kicked off a pilot project to educate 100 manufacturers about CSR, to maintain their competitiveness in the global market when ISO 26000 takes effect in two years. The project will be run until October.

"Manufacturers should realise CSR is the best way to sustain their business in the long-term.

Most global firms would like to become partners with companies that comply with good governance but ignore those that focus solely on making profit," said director-general Rachada Singalavanija.

Wattana Opanonamata, senior executive vice president of Corporate Administration and Information Technology, Bangchak Petroleum, said the company has focused on developing three main parts: community building, the standard of living and environmental protection.

Deputy Prime Minister and Industry Minister Suwit Khunkitti said the industrial sector would be forced by the public to embrace "zero-waste" operations in the future.
