Thai stars! wax it up, rip it off for the environment

It's heartening to see that many people are going green by using cloth bags to put their shopping in.

They are willing to put most of their purchases in them but some greasy food items still have to be wrapped in plastic bags. Even so, this helps reduce the number of plastic bags in circulation.

These days, it seems people are picking up on the message that their little contribution could help improve the world environment, which has recently suffered from devastating natural disasters. Even sales staff smile when told by customers that they do not need plastic bags. Several celebrities here are joining the "Save the World" campaign.

Former TV host Varisra Leetheerakul has opened a pollution-free resort, while actress Natarika Thampreedanant is involving herself in assisting injured animals and campaigning against the illegal trade in wild animals.

Even so, we've seen fewer reports of Thai celebrities taking the lead on this front compared to personalities in Western countries.

Well-known as an activist for many different causes, actress Daryl Hannah recently opened an online store selling only environmentally friendly goods.

Singer Jack Johnson works tirelessly towards raising environmental awareness. Johnson and his wife set up the Kokua Hawaii Foundation, and he has performed in school classrooms to help raise awareness.

Johnson supports the Australian Marine Conservation Society, which is working to increase protection for threatened sea turtles through the Save Moreton Bay campaign.

While being involving in wild life conservation for some time, Harrison Ford, whose latest Indiana Jones movie has just been released, recently had his chest waxed to raise awareness of rainforest conservation.

"When people slash and burn rainforests, tonnes of carbon are released into the atmosphere. It changes our climate. It damages our health," Agence France-Presse quoted Ford as saying in a video clip which could be entitled "Indiana Jones and the Wrath of Wax".

Anyone who has ever waxed their legs, or, worse still, their bikini line or under their arms, knows that this form of hair removal can be very painful. But while Ford winces, he doesn't make a peep when the aesthetician in the short video rips a wide swathe of his chest hair out.

"Every bit of rainforest that gets ripped out over there," he says, as the aesthetician pats down a wax strip and then rips it off, "really hurts us over here".

Activists take protecting the fragile world very seriously, they are not interested in petty arguments about who wins or loses battles. Everything would pale into insignificance if the world falls apart and we can't migrate to the moon in time.
