Pop goes the heart

TV anchor krissana chairat reveals how GIF treatment helped him achieve his dream of having a baby

Pop goes the heart

At the end of a storm, there's a golden sky. With time, television anchor Krissana Chairat has left behind the memory of a road accident that has confined him to a wheelchair for more than 10 years.

Last year he got married. These days, he's got new things to celebrate. His wife, Natidi Tasanapoonchai, is pregnant.

Doctors say they will have a boy. Krissana, 40, told Sunday Xpress all about it.

You're having a son, just a year after getting married. Had you planned it?

We'd planned to have a baby before we got married. I want to have a complete family like other couples, a father, mother and children. That would make me happy. My plan is to have two sons and a daughter.

How did you overcome your physical problems?

Well, as you know, I am a disabled man. The lower part of my body doesn't respond well. But it's not a problem. I went to consult a doctor at Siriraj Hospital.

He suggested we have a baby using assisted reproductive technology, called gamete intrafallopian transfer, GIF.

We started this in May 2007, but it didn't work. I was upset and depressed, because having a baby is my dream. I talked with my wife and told her to let it go, but we still wanted to have the baby.

How did you handle the problem?

It might sound ridiculous to you, but for me it was very serious. Some friends suggested I pray to the Lord Buddha and ask him to confer a baby on me. I did it several times, even when I was behind the steering wheel, I prayed to our Lord Buddha: "Please give me a baby." Then we decided to start using the GIF technique again. And now my wife has been pregnant for five months. The doctor told me it's a boy.

How are you preparing to be a father?

You know, we can't sleep all night because we're thinking about the name we will give our son. I keep changing, both nickname and first name. My friends advise me to ask Sathienpong Wannaprok the poet for the best name, but now I have two to choose from: News and Ohm.

What do you want your child to be when he grows up?

I'm not thinking about it yet. It's too far ahead for me. I'm just thinking about the name and a safe delivery.

Is sex important to your marriage?

Absolutely!

But the most important thing is to be happy with my wife and my kid.
