NTC to seek ruling on foreign deals

The national telecommunications regulator will consult with the Council of State to determine whether it can enforce Thai laws on some telecom contracts made between its licensees and foreign entities.

Takorn Tantasit, deputy secretary-general of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), said on Thursday that the move followed the recent complaint by Total Access Communication, True Move and CAT Telecom that the enforcement of the relevant Thai laws and judicial system on some contracts would disrupt their business operations.

"They said enforcement would make their operations lack flexibility," he added.

The enforcement covers contracts for equipment procurement, network maintenance and the lease of data-communications networks, all made with foreign companies.

Local telecom operators have applied several international standard laws when making such contracts with foreign firms.
