Poonpirom Liptapanlop yesterday said she wanted to encourage the private sector to produce power using alternative energy such as wind, cellular, solar and waste matter.
"I have assigned the permanent secretary to discuss with participants to find out an appropriate rate," she said.
The move is aimed at checking the high cost of living and inflation, sparked by rising oil prices.
Permanent secretary Pornchai Rujiprapha said that before raising the rate, the authorities should study the financial and production costs for each type of alternative fuel to determine their actual production costs. Currently, the added rate for electricity generated from waste matter is Bt2.5 per unit.
The rate for wind-made power is Bt3.5 per unit, while cellular energy carries a rate of Bt8 per unit.
The rate for biogas power is 30 satang per unit. Hydropower plants with a capacity of 50-200 kilowatts enjoy a rate of 40 satang per unit, while hydroelectric plants with a capacity below 50 kilowatts carry a rate of 80 satang per unit.
