Coalition leaders begin meet on charter change

Leaders of the coalition parties gathered tonight for a dinner meeting that focused on the ruling People Power Party's plan to amend the Constitution.

Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej, who is the PPP leader, played host to his counterparts from other coalition parties.

There was a heavy presence of media representatives at the restaurant.

Ruam Jai Thai Chart Pattana Party leader Chettha Thanajaro was the first coalition leader to arrive at the venue, Paisano Restaurant in the Chit Lom area, at about 6.40 pm.

Chettha told reporters that he would promise his party's support to the PPP bid to rewrite the charter. He said there were many clauses in the current Constitution that needed to be amended for the public's interests.

He was later joined by Puea Pandin Party leader Suwit Khunkitti, who said that he would raise the matter of economic problems facing the country. He added that he would also ask the prime minister to take "special care" on the matter.

Shortly after 7 pm, other coalition leaders arrived - Pracharaj's Snoh Thienthong, Matchima Thipataya's Anongwan Thepsuthin, and Samak. Chart Thai leader Banharn Silpa-archa was the last of the six leaders to show up, arriving at the restaurant at about 7.35 pm.
