Samak signals a compromise over charter rewrite

Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej said on Wednesday he would personally brief the press about charter rewrite after tonight's dinner with coalition partners at 7 pm.

Samak hinted that the government would leave it up to Parliament to debate and decide on constitutional changes.

He said he was no longer push for the cancellation or rewrite of Article 309, seen as an attempt to nullify the junta's decrees on graft proceedings involving former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra. The amendments should focus on the electoral rules, such as the constituency zoning and the reintroduction of completelyelected Senate, he added.
