He said charter changes reflected further advances in political and social developments. "Changes were made to past constitutions. It's not so terrible to have another amendment," he said.
Chavalit said he did not think the ongoing confrontation between supporters and detractors of the charter changes would lead to violence as feared. However, he called on the anti-amendment People's Alliance for Democracy and the pro-change Democratic Alliance Against Dictatorship to learn from past lessons and join hands for a better future.
"If the changes are for a stronger political system, both sides should join hands. The goal is a better future for the country, and not to destroy the opposition," said Chavalit.
The ex-premier also expressed confidence in Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej's ability to run the country. "He is superb. I have trust in him. I used to work with him and know him well," Chavalit said.
