"Consumers should adjust to the new price," Somroek Tangpiroonthum, chief executive officer, told Krungthep Turakij yesterday. "Retailers and others also understand bagged rice must increase in price."
He said if the Internal Trade Department wanted to block the move, he was ready to explain and help the government, but the new price must be in line with costs.
Somroek said consumers were faced with two tiers of prices. While those shopping at modern trade channels enjoy a price of about Bt160 per 5kg pack, buyers in general spend Bt200. This encourages people to stock up on rice from modern retailers. Rice traders must adjust prices according to the cost of new rice supply.
