Maize will be the first crop to be insured under the programme, effective from May 12. It will cover four provinces: Nakhon Ratchasima, Nakhon Sawan, Phetchabun and Lop Buri.

"The OIC is cooperating with the Agriculture Ministry, the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives and the General Insurance Association in conducting the feasibility study of extending insurance to the rice crop, because it is Thailand's major crop," said secretary-general Chantra Purnariksha.

The results of the study should be released soon. The goal is to help reduce farmers' risks from growing rice in an unpredictable environment, particularly drought.
