The 1997 charter invoked to mask self-serving interests: Jurin

The revival of the suspended 1997 charter is a bait to justify constitutional changes although the coalition government aims for self-serving gains, Democrat Party deputy leader Jurin Laksanavisit said on Wednesday.

"The 1997 charter is being used to mask the real intent - the cancellation of Articles 237 and 309," he said, noting that the government wants to do away with the punishment by party dissolution and assist expremier Thaksin Shinawatra eluding graft charges.

Jurin said the country will continue to be mired by electoral fraud and corruption if the government is allowed to abuse its majority to rig the rules for the survival of certain political parties and individuals.
