Finance roadshow hits S'pore

With investors having many questions that need to be answered, Thailand is holding another overseas roadshow after the Finance Ministry recently conducted such events in New York and London.

This time, the roadshow, called Thailand Focus, will be hosted by the Stock Exchange of Thailand and securities firms. The SET, SCB Securities, Goldman Sachs and 11 listed companies will join the Singapore roadshow from today until Friday.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Surapong Suebwonglee, an advisory team and the deputy director-general of the Fiscal Policy Office will be part of the roadshow.

"At Thailand Focus on April 25, the Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Surapong Suebwonglee will deliver the keynote address, entitled 'Putting Thailand back on track: What's next on the policy agenda?' to about 60 participants from 50 institutions," SET president Patareeya Benjapholchai said.

"The event will update foreign institutions about Thailand's economic, political and investment conditions and build confidence in the Thai market among this important investor group.

"We will be emphasising products to be launched this year, such as gold and stock futures, and providing the latest information on listed companies. Senior executives of 11 participating firms will attend one-on-one and group meetings with foreign institutions."

The listed companies are from four industry groups and have a combined market capitalisation of Bt1.87 trillion or 28.54 per cent of total market capitalisation as of April 21.

They are Bank of Ayudhya and Siam Commercial Bank from the financial industry group; IRPC, PTT and PTT Aromatics and Refining from the resources industry group; Siam Cement, Central Pattana and Quality Houses from the property and construction industry group; and Bumrungrad Hospital, Major Cineplex Group and the Erawan Group from the services industry group.

Aside from questions for individual companies, the key questions to be asked by foreign investors are expected to be similar to what earlier Thai delegates were asked by investors in the roadshow during the Songkran festival.

They include how the government would handle the current hot political issue of party dissolution involving the Chai Thai Party and Machima Tipataya.

In addition, the investors will inquire about the planned mega projects and solutions for financing.

The likely economic outlook for Thailand and how the country would be affected by the US sub-prime crisis are also likely to be on the agenda.
