PAO polls held in 41 provinces

Elections in 41 provinces took place Sunday without any complications and there was no balloting-related complaint filed, Election Commission member Prapun Naigowit said.

"The balloting is complete and I am happy to report no serious violations were detected," he said.

Prapun predicted a turnout of 70 per cent, although many observers said the actual votes cast might hover at no more than 60 per cent.

Voters in 25 provinces cast ballots for presidents of provincial administrative organisations (PAOs) and their members, also known as provincial councillors. The other 15 provinces saw the elections of PAO members and Kanchanaburi voted to elect a PAO president.

The voting outcome is expected to be announced in 30 days.

Heavy rain in Nakhon Si Thammarat and Suphan Buri caused damage to some polling stations but did not disrupt the balloting.

The turnout in Pattani might be lower than forecast as a number of voters failed to return to their hometowns to vote.

In Narathiwat, violence continued uninterrupted. Two police officers were shot dead by suspected militants.
