Shell hikes prices, ptt waits

Petrol and diesel prices at Shell stations will hit a record high today, after oil retailers decided to jack up prices by 50 satang a litre on continued hikes in global oil prices.

Shell's premium petrol will cost Bt35.59 per litre, while diesel will be Bt32.44.

Shell Thailand's general manager for retail sales and operations, Simon Hirst, yesterday said the continued increases in global crude oil prices pressured marketing margins: 75 satang per litre for premium petrol and minus Bt1.27 per litre for diesel.

To cover costs, diesel should have been raised by Bt3 per litre, but Shell opted for the 50-satang increase to lessen the burden on consumers during the Songkran holiday, he said.

Refined premium petrol on Thursday shot up to US$117 (Bt3,700) per barrel and refined diesel to $139.50.

PTT president Prasert Bunsumpun yesterday insisted his company would not raise prices during Songkran, but rather would reconsider the matter after the holiday period.

PTT sells premium petrol at Bt35.09 per litre and diesel at Bt31.94.

Bangchak Petroleum's diesel is the cheapest, at Bt31.44 per litre.
