New Bt2 coins to hit market in September

Finance Ministry will introduce a new series of Bt2 coins in September. From silver, the new coins' colour will be gold to avoid confusion with the silver Bt1 coins.

Deputy Finance Minister Ranongrak Suwanchawee said a total of 180 million coins will be minted. The existing coins will also remain in circulation.

"So far, the old series have caused confusion as they look much alike the Bt1 coins," she said.

More Bt2 coins will reduce the Treasury Department's minting costs, as the weight of a Bt2 coin is less than two units of Bt1 coins.
