Shell raises retail oil prices

Shell will raise petrol and diesel prices by 50 satang, effective on Saturday, on continued hikes in global oil prices.

After the increase, premium petrol will cost Bt35.59 per litre. Diesel will also make a new record high at Bt32.44 per litre.

Shell Company of Thailand's ... Simon Hirst said that the continued hike in oil price pressured marketing margins: that of premium petrol stayed at 75 satang per litre for premium petrol and minus Bt1.27 per litre for diesel. To cover the cost, diesel should have been raised Bt3 per litre, but Shell opted for the 50-satang increase to lessen consumers' burden during the Songkran holiday.

Refined premium petrol on Thursday shot up to US$117 a barrel while refined diesel at $139.50.

PTT President Prasert Bunsumpun insisted on Friday that his company would not raise prices during Songkran, but after the holiday period, it would reconsider.

PTT now sell premium petrol at Bt35.09, and diesel at Bt31.94. Bangchak Petroleum's diesel price would be the cheapest, at Bt31.44 per litre.
