Phone authority earns profit of almost Bt1 bn

The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) enjoyed a net profit of almost Bt1 billion last year on revenue of Bt2.7 billion from regulatory fees.

Deputy secretary-general Takorn Tantasit yesterday said the NTC was considering saving part of its Bt933-million net profit for its telecom-development fund. The rest will be transferred to the state treasury.

Of total expenses last year, more than Bt1 billion was regulatory-related, more than Bt700 million went for staff salaries and about Bt40 million was spent on foreign travel for study tours. The NTC had budgeted Bt60 million for study tours.

The NTC has been criticised for wasting too much money on foreign field trips, but it has argued its members do not travel in big groups.

The NTC was set up more than three years ago to regulate the telecom industry. Its main revenue comes from licence and phone-number fees.
