Abhisit says Democrats will grow

On the Democrat Party's 62nd birthday yesterday, leader Abhisit Vejjajiva vowed it would do its best as the opposition and he would set his sights on winning more than half the seats in the next election.

Meanwhile, he called on the government parties to stop acting in their own political self-interest.

Several key party figures took part in yesterday's event, but there were no politicians from other parties.

There were heavy rains before the religious ceremony began.

Abhisit utilised most of his brief speech in sending a message to the government.

He slammed its attempt to push for constitutional amendments, saying it was intended to politically benefit the People Power Party.

"If the government gives up the idea of amending the Constitution for its interest, I believe that society will join forces in supporting the government in solving economic problems and the violence in the South," Abhisit said.

He said history had provided lessons of doom to governments heavily involved in corruption.

Abhisit briefly spelled out the party's plan for the coming year. He said it would develop the strength of its branches as well as organise activities with the participation of the people, especially the young generation.
