Air passengers may be allowed to use mobile phones

Chaisak said the issue is being considered by a special committee after finding that some new mobile phone models cannot be turned off except by removing the battery.

He said that the National Aeronautics Space Administration had conducted a study which initially found that cell phone signals would not disrupt or pose any technical problem for aircraft while flying.

Other factors may have to be taken into consideration before lifting the existing regulation that forbids air passengers from using mobile phones while in the air, said Chaisak.

These factors include disrupting passengers' attention when giving instructions on how to use safety equipment available, or causing disturbance to other passengers.

A new order will be issued if the regulation is lifted, he said, adding that some airlines may come up with their own rules.

Senior executives of airlines oppose the plan to allow passengers to use mobile phones. They reason that cell phone conversations will disturb other passengers.

The executives said if cell phones are allowed for passengers, they should be used for Internet access only.
