State Witness in Yongyuth trial aks EC for protection

A prosecution witness in the electoral fraud case involving House Speaker Yongyuth Tiyapairat yesterday sounded the alarm over his safety and sent his son from Chiang Rai to file a complaint with the Election Commission in Bangkok.

Published on April 5, 2008

The complaint was lodged by Kriengkrai Changkhaokham, son of witness Chaiwat Changkhaokham, a kamnan in Mae Chan district, seen as a political stronghold of Yongyuth.

Chaiwat's testimony may implicate Yongyuth for vote-buying while running as a People Power party-list candidate for Zone 1 in the December election.

Kriengkrai said his father had received many death threats since giving his statement.

"I fear for my father's safety after he received a letter dated March 6 threatening to kill him if he refuses to recant his statement during the upcoming trial," he said in reference to the judicial review in the Supreme Court.

He said local police officers, who used to provide protection for his father, had been suspiciously transferred to other duties.

Election commissioner Sumeth Ubanisakorn said the committee would consider Chaiwat's complaint on Tuesday.

However, he said it was not only the EC's responsibility but also that of the government.
